Avalon Fast, the writer and director of the movie "Camp," describes her film as "a group of girls in the woods engaging in unusual activities." This evocative description sets the stage for a unique cinematic journey. The film, now showing, explores themes of camaraderie, LGBTQ+ identity, and the mystical, offering a distinct perspective on these elements.
Fast's second feature film, "Camp," follows her 2022 work, "Honeycomb." It has garnered significant acclaim at various festivals, notably receiving the Next Wave award at last year's Fantastic Fest. The film's emotional depth is heavily reliant on its cast, who formed genuine bonds during production. Fast noted that while she was deeply involved in the directing process, the actors developed a strong collective dynamic, which organically translated into the film's authentic portrayal of their relationships.
The movie's striking visual style is a collaborative effort with cinematographer Eily Sprungman. Fast credits their shared history and deep understanding of their Alberta, Canada, upbringing as key to capturing the film's mystical atmosphere. She explains that the sacredness and enchantment of their childhood landscape profoundly inspired the film's visuals, with some shots even drawing inspiration from Renaissance art. Looking ahead, Fast aims to explore new narratives, including a future project focusing on a male protagonist, while also acknowledging the possibility of revisiting her 'girl horror cult' theme one more time to fully explore her current artistic inquiries.
This film stands as a testament to the power of personal storytelling and the magic that can be found in both nature and human connection. It encourages viewers to embrace unique visions and the deeper meanings that emerge from authentic artistic expression.
